The festive season isn't just about binging on food (although it is the best and most acceptable time to do so), but it's also about binging on your favourite TV. You're off work so you might as well, right? Well if you agree, we've done you a massive favour and have rounded up our top picks on Netflix this coming season for you to tune in to.
We've decided to come up with all the best Netflix winter shows, Netflix movies and documentaries you should be watching when you have some free time (which we reckon you'll probably have plenty of over the festive period when you're nursing one of the many hangovers). "I wonder what's on Netflix" will probably come to mind at one point this December, so we've done the trawling for you and compiled a list of the best things to be releasing and to already exist.
Stranger Things 2
By now we hope you have already caught up on Stranger Things 2 (it has been out for over a month now). The latest series sees the return of Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Noah Schnapp and Charlie Heaton. This series continues on from the first (if you haven't seen this then we recommend binging the first series when you get a moment) and explores what happened after Will went into 'the upside down'. Expect it to be a whole lot darker this time around.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
While we await the release of the next in the Star Wars film franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, to be released in cinemas later this month, you can instead binge watch 2015's The Force Awakens in preparation. The movie is now available to watch to your heart's content all winter long.
The Crown is undoubtedly one of the biggest series of the year and this Christmas we recommend getting in on the action. The full first season was released last year and the second season is slated for a release on December 8th on Netflix.
The show came as a result of Peter Morgan's 2006 film The Queen and is intended to last 6 seasons with 60 episodes making up the bulk. It has been met with critical acclaim, not only for the acting and production, but also for the fact that it accurately represents Queen Elizabeth's reign. Claire Foy and Matt Smith (of Doctor Who fame) are the lead stars and head up this very English drama (although Olivia Colman steps in to play the next stage of Elizabeth's life in the second series). Well worth watching over the festive period - it's definitely the next Downton Abbey.
Wormwood is a really interesting concept. It's been dubbed as a docudrama hybrid - a four and a half hour mini series about real life events. It focuses on the CIA's real-life experiments. Errol Morris focuses his attention in this programme on a CIA operative named Frank Olson, who jumped out of a hotel window to his death in 1953.
Starring Peter Sarsgaard, this is a series that attempts to get to the bottom of who did it and what happened - a proper mind-boggling crime thriller. This will be available on Netflix December 15th and we can't wait. It is one of the best new Netflix original series and is definitely worth a watch when you get some free time this festive period.
If you haven't already watched any of Peaky blinders, then where the hell have you been? It's undoubtedly one of the best TV series to come of the UK and soon the whole thing will be available on Netflix (December 21st FYI). Season 4 has just kicked off on national TV, but you can watch every season thus far as many times as you like on Netflix - perfect for those cold evenings in when you don't feel like partying.
Don't know what it's about? It's essentially based on a real-life gangster family from 1919. Based in Birmingham, the gang sewed razor blades in the peaks of their caps (hence the name), and their boss Tommy Shelby means to help his family and friends move up in the world. It has a stellar cast including Cillian Murphy, Adrian Brody, Tom Hardy and Helen McCrory, so is well worth a watch and will really give your Christmas period an added boost!
Planet Earth II
Let's face it, if you haven't seen an episode of Planet Earth before then you are probably one of very few who haven't. It is one of the best and most-watched programmes on television and now David Attenborough's venture Planet Earth II is about to land on Netflix.
Available from Christmas Day, you can now watch freely the epic exploration of our planet which sees Attenborough narrate. Planet Earth II is the first natural history documentary to be filmed in high definition, so you can expect some great things. A great watch for a cosy evening in with the family.
The Toys That Made Us
This Netflix original series is one of the most talked about of the year and at last is dropping on the platform. It is one of the new shows to be released and for the toy lovers amongst you, you're in for a treat. On December 22nd you will be able to stream the whole of the first season of The Toys That Made Us which will please the Eighties babies among you. Focusing on the creation of toys, their history and how they impacted our lives, this is one of the most interesting documentaries out there.
At long last Eminem's acting debut has landed on Netflix. If you've never seen it before, then now you really have no excuse. It's a stellar performance from the rapper and really allows him to prove his acting ability. The 2002 film, written by Scott Silver and directed by Curtis Hanson, also stars the late Brittany Murphy. The film tells the tale of a young aspiring rapper (much like Eminem) who wants to make it big, but his personal life gets in the way. This is one of the best Netflix movies available right now so get watching this Christmas.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Got kids? Then they'll love Ace Ventura. The classic movie is Jim Carrey's finest and is what really sent him to superstardom. Now you can watch it as many times as you like as it's now available to stream on Netflix and is undoubtedly ones of the best films on Netflix right now. Who didn't love Ace Ventura as a child? What's more, you can also now watch Ave Ventura: When Nature Calls, which is the second instalment in the Ace Ventura series. Perfect Christmas watching.
Hitch is one of Will Smith's best films and finally, at long last, it has been brought to Netflix. A real easy watch, this is perfect for any hangover after a Christmas party. Full of laughs and quite romantic, this is the perfect movie for a Netflix and chill evening.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
It only came out this year, but Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is already on Netflix and will most likely prove to be one of the most popular Netflix movies this Christmas. It is the sequel to the 2014 Guardians Of The Galaxy film and has been met with critical acclaim and all round positive reviews. Definitely one to get the kids watching on Christmas Eve this year! Chris Pratt gets an extra round of applause for his scenes in this movie.
Disney's The Santa Clause
Just in time for Christmas, Netflix has decided to stream the whole The Santa Clause trilogy. Is there a better Christmas film than the original? It's debatable, but either way, be sure to get watching this one over the festive period. Chances are it'll be taken off Netflix as soon as we hit January.
Scary Movie 2
Sure it's the Christmas period, but who doesn't love Scary Movie? Netflix will be releasing both Scary Movie 1 and 2 just after the big day and we personally are extremely happy about it. Scary movies might be typically dark and sombre, but Scary Movie franchise is able to still be pretty comical. Just some good old fun to be had here.
Anyone who grew up watching the Disney Channel will remember this instant classic. It was one of the best films to come off the back of Disney's original movies and now will be available to stream on Netflix throughout the festive period. The 2003 movie stars the likes of Shia LeBeouf, Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight, so you can guarantee it's going to be a winner. Get your kids in on the know now.
While this is a cartoon, we throughly don't recommend letting your kids watch this one. Big Mouth is essentially about a bunch of kids who are hitting puberty, so expect some pretty dark humour. Each episode is pretty short as well, so you can expect to be able to bash a series out in one sitting (with a box of Quality Street, of course).
On That Note
With the festive season fast approaching, there's plenty for you binge watch on Netflix when you get a spare moment. Whether it's when you're hungover after a Christmas party or simply if you fancy a quiet night in, there's plenty for you to get stuck into. Series like Peaky Blinders and Wormwood are ideal for the cold nights, while the release of The Santa Claus will be sure to get you in the festive spirit.
