A popular spot for many City workers, Coq d'Argent's bar manages to create a perfect balance between relaxation and sophistication. With a cocktail selection inspired by 1920s Paris that features a wide range of luxurious ingredients, it's certainly not your everyday bar.

Unless you know where to look you could be forgiven for not noticing Coq d'Argent was even there. Sitting at the very top of the impressive No. 1 Poultry building, your experience will begin with an anticipatory lift ride to the top floor. As you enter through one of the many picturesque gardens you are surrounded by growing vines and pillars, creating a maze like environment that builds a certain atmosphere of mystery. It's certainly not hard to forget you're in the middle of London's biggest business quarter. That is, of course, until you witness the magnificent view of the City from the top of their scenic main garden terrace.

Placed behind the restaurant, the bar sits to the right-hand side of the building, looking out onto one of Coq d'Argent's famous garden terraces. Once the friendly staff have shown you to your table, you are left to eagerly browse the extensive bar & grill menu.

When it comes to the menu you are spoiled for choice. If you like to think of yourself as someone that knows a thing of two about fine liquors then you've definitely come to the right place. Boasting a sizeable collection of any spirit, including aged whisky and rum, you can see where they get their reputation from. Although the wine selection isn't as large, it's just as luxurious.

In addition to all of this, it's when you reach the cocktail menu that things start to get exciting. Unlike most cocktail bars, Coq d'Argent really does have something for everyone. If you're looking for something a bit more traditionally Parisian then choosing something from the Champagne cocktails or French collections is just for you. In particular, the French 75, created with gin, lemon juice and topped with Möet and Chandon is a classic favourite.

On the other hand, if you're in the mood for something a bit more innovative then try a drink from their two creations collections, which the menu describes as "A selection of French contemporary cocktails inspired by the 1920s era in Paris" or "contemporary cocktails inspired by spirits, ingredients and flavours from around the world". With all the cocktails costing £13, they're certainly not cheap. However, for the quality that you receive, it's more than worth it.

As far as the food goes, the bar offers a line-up of tasty bar snacks created by head chef Damien Rigollet. Ranging from something as simple as sliced pitta bread and hummus to calamari rings and fries, Coq d'Argent knows how to make even the most basic of snacks seem elegant. Arranged on rustic wooden boards, they don't scrimp on the portion sizes either. A pair of bar snacks between two is more than enough to keep you going until dinner.

What to Wear

As Coq d'Argent is known for its business clientele you wouldn't look out of place if you wanted to go wearing your best tailored suit. However, the more relaxed setting of the bar means that this is by no means essential. A smart shirt matched with a pair of trousers or chinos is more than enough to feel at home. Although you could wear a pair of smart trainers, topping your outfit off with some leather shoes is a great way to finish your ensemble.
