2018 is set to be a big year for film and there are plenty of big releases coming your way. We've chosen the ten that we are most excited about, from the next instalment in the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them series to Solo: A Star Wars Story. 2017 itself was a pretty good year for film, but we can guarantee that 2018 will trump it.
2017 saw some of the biggest film releases yet, from the likes of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Greatest Showman to IT and Dunkirk. The film industry was at the centre of attention for the majority of the year, with the Oscars blunder causing a stir and then the controversy surrounding Harvey Weinstein coming to light. Yet 2018 is set to be an even bigger year (for film releases that is) and we can't wait until the suspected big hitters are released. Below we have predicted which films we think will be the best releases of the year, with the hotly anticipated Incredibles 2 sequel finally coming out.
Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers: Infinity War is the other massive Marvel movie that is set to take 2018 by storm. Continuing on from the success of 2012’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron, the latest film will be released in May.
The film will see the Avengers team up with the Guardian’s of the Galaxy, another set of Marvel superheroes, as they attempt to save the world (obviously). Robert Downey Jr will reprise his role as Tony Stark AKA Iron Man, while Josh Brolin will play the bad guy Thanos. The rest of the cast will include Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Jeremy Renner, Benedict Cumberbatch, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Scarlet Johannson, to name just a few of the stellar cast.
We can guarantee that this is going to be one of the films of the year, and with a cast like that, it’s not hard to see why.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Solo: A Star Wars Story is the upcoming film in the Star Wars franchise and will focus solely on Han Solo. Continuing on from the two releases under the Disney belt, Solo will be released by the giant company along with Lucasfilm and is scheduled for a release in May 2018.
The movie has been dubbed a 'space western' and will show the story of Han Solo before he met Luke Skywalker. We will see young Solo's adventure with Chewbacca, his famous wookie pal, and even get to see his first encounter with Lando Calrissian which is only touched upon in the original Star Wars trilogy. The film will star Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover (AKA Childish Gambino) as Lando Calrissian, as well as Emilia Clarke, Woodie Harrelson and Thandie Newton. As Star Wars films have a history of smashing box office records, we can guarantee this will be one of the best films of 2018.
It’s safe to say that Black Panther is going to be one of the best new films of the year. Based on the Marvel comics of the same name, the American film will be distributed by Disney and Marvel together (so you can guarantee it’s going to be good).
The cast is endless and will see the likes of Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis team up for what is inevitably going to be one of the biggest movies of the year. Chadwick Boseman takes centre stage as T’Challa, AKA Black Panther, in a plot that sees him return home as king of Wakanda, where he finds his sovereignty challenged.
Black Panther is set to be released on the 16th February 2018 and will definitely be one of 2018's must see movies.
Deadpool 2 is the sequel to the 2016 film Deadpool which starred Ryan Reynolds and is one of the most hotly anticipated films coming out in 2018. The sequel will also star T.J. Williams, Morena Baccarin and Josh Brolin and is set to be the eleventh instalment in the X-Men film series. So far very little is known about the plot of the film, but if it's anything like the first Deadpool movie, you can expect it to be full of wise cracks and action-packed to the max. Production on a third Deadpool film has already taken place.
The Incredibles 2
Back in 2004 Disney and Pixar released one of its best ever films. The Incredibles was met with critical acclaim and has been hailed as a cinematic marvel, but now 14 years later, Disney and Pixar are picking up where they left off and The Incredibles 2 is set for a release in June 2018. Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell and Samuel L. Jackson will all be reprising their roles.
The film picks up where the last one ended and the main family are struggling to get to grips with normal life, while Elastigirl (the mum) is out fighting crime. Mr Incredible is housebound and slowly discovering baby Jack Jack's new powers, but soon the family, along with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) must face a new villain.
Ocean's 8 is set to be one of the biggest 2018 film releases and will see the original Ocean's 11 film completely flipped on its head as the producers have called for a female-lead cast. The film will focus on Danny Ocean's sister as she attempts to pull off the heist of the century at the Met Gala. Sandra Bullock will star as Debbie Ocean while Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter will play her crew. The film also stars Damian Lewis, Richard Armitage and James Corden, as well as seeing the reprisal of Matt Damon and Carl Reiner's roles. If that's not enough the film will also feature cameos from Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Alexander Wang, Maria Sharapova, Derek Blasberg, Zayn Malik, Katie Holmes, Olivia Munn, Adriana Lima, Hailey Baldwin, Serena Williams, Kylie Jenner and Zac Posen.
Ocean's 8 is set for a June 2018 release and will undoubtedly be one of the biggest films of the summer.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald
This film continues on from 2015’s Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and will stand as the tenth instalment building on the wizarding world of JK Rowling.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald has been directed by David Yates, and has a script written by JK Rowling herself. The film is set to be one of the biggest films releases of 2018, especially as the Harry Potter phenomenon does not look to be slowing down anytime soon. The film is supposedly going to be coming out in November 2018 and will inevitably be the film of Christmas 2018.
The film has an incredible cast once again and will include the likes of Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, and Claudia Kim. The plot will continue where the first film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise left off, with the dark wizard Grindelwald presenting his true form, who will be played by Johnny Depp. This film will see the introduction of Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) who, along with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), will try to take down Grindelwald.
The 2018 version of Tomb Raider will be a reboot of the original film series which starred Angelina Jolie, but this time around it the main character will be played by Alicia Vikander. The film will explore the first expedition of Lara Croft, on which she goes to complete her father's research and uncover ancient secrets capable of clearing her name. The film also stars Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, Nick Frost and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The Tomb Raider franchise has always been popular, mainly due to its success as a video game phenomenon, and it will be interesting to see how Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander fares against Angelina Jolie when the film is released in March 2018.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is set for a release in June 2018 and alongside Ocean's 8 and The Incredibles 2, looks set to be one of the biggest films of the summer. It is going to be the fifth instalment in the Jurassic Park series and will see Steven Spielberg back in his role as an executive producer, while Derek Connolly and Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow return as writers.
The film will also see the return of Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and B. D. Wong who will be joined by the likes of Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall. The big name though is Jeff Goldblum, who will reprise his role as Dr Ian Malcolm from the original two Jurassic Park movies.
The film sees the us revisit the events after Jurassic World. In this, the theme park was destroyed and now Claire Wearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) has founded a park protection group, although soon enough her and Chris Pratt discover a conspiracy that is a threat to both dinosaurs and humanity.
Isle Of Dogs
Wes Andersen is one of the best directors in the world and whenever a new release from him is on the horizon, you know something special is coming. Isle Of Dogs is expected to be no different and it is set to be one of The Grand Budapest Hotel hitmaker's most interesting films to date.
The animated film will feature the voices of Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, and Bob Balaban amongside many others and is set for a release in March 2018. The movie is set in a dystopian future Japan where dogs have been quarantined on the remote eponymous island due to a so-called canine flu. Isle of Dogs follows five local dogs who are fed up with their isolated existence. This is until a boy named Atari Kobayashi ventures to the island to search for his dog, Spots, and they decide to try and help him.
