Ah December – aka the month where it’s perfectly acceptable to be in a constant hungover/tipsy/full-to-bursting haze. If you can’t indulge during Christmas, when can you? And to celebrate this festive gluttony, some of our favourite restaurants are serving limited edition dishes inspired by the season. In other words, expect copious amounts of meat, cheese, and cranberry sauce.
The Christmas Burger from Ben’s Canteen
Beloved neighbourhood eatery Ben’s Canteen are famous for their burger offerings – and so had to pull something special out of Santa’s sack for Christmas. Behold – Ben’s Christmas Burger. There’s turkey, but not as you know it – this has been fried in a crispy sage and shallot buttermilk coating, and is served with a squashed stuffing ball, slow roasted honey & mustard ham hock, and buttered brussel tops.
Finally, smother the whole thing with cranberry sauce and garlic mayo and you have a festive feast of epic proportions. And, true to form, they’ve matched it with a special wine as well – make sure to quaff a glass of light and fresh Adega de Monaco from Portugal. Will you be able to move afterwards? Maybe not – but what a great excuse to take the afternoon off.
The Christmas Sandwich from Blacklock
Now, if there’s one thing Blacklock can do well it’s meat, as displayed when they won the Observer Food Monthly Best Sunday Roast earlier this year. They were never going to let Christmas pass by without some sort of #FoodPorn worthy offering, and so behold: The Blacklock Christmas Sandwich.
Best of British turkey, homemade sausage and onion patty, crisp bacon and spiced cranberry ketchup – as well as some steamed greens to, er, keep things healthy. It’s practically a roast dinner in a demi-brioche bun, apart from the turkey gravy. Oh wait! You can also get a side of that to dip the whole thing in. Ding dong merrily on high.
The Venison Xmas BRGR from BRGR.CO
Already known for serving some of the most delicious burgers in London made with prime quality steak, BRGR.CO have upped the anti in December by bringing diners a succulent venison patty, smothered in that most Christmassy of cheese, brie.
Topped with crisp bacon and a juicy dollop of cranberry sauce, then serve with a side of sweet potato fries, and you’ve got an indulgent feast that even the most Scrooge-like sourpuss would go giddy over. And for the full festive effect, make sure to order a Gingerbread Milkshake to complete the meal. Extra points if you also plump for a slug of bourbon in there.
The Elk Burger from Kupp
2016, it can generally be agreed, has been a year that many would like to forget. Yet one of the positive things to come out of it is an awareness of the Danish word ‘hygge’ which roughly translates to cosiness. And while there are many places promising to offer a warm snuggle for the soul, none can be more authentic than Scandi-inspired casual dining concept, KuPP, located in Paddington.
Why not go off-piste and try their decadently stacked double patty Elk Burger, complete with oozing Danish Blue cheese, and topped with smoked onions and roasted beets. Complete this with a cup of Glögg – mulled wine finished with warming fresh ginger and a sprinkling of flaked almonds – and you’re cockles will be glowing as red as Rudolph’s nose.
What to Wear to Dinner
Knowing what to wear to dinner can be a tricky concept to grasp. You don't know whether to go smart or keep it a little more casual, however, if you're going to be doing the rounds around various burger joints then a casual approach may be your best option.
On That Note
The burger phenomenon isn't going away anytime soon, and our top picks this year certainly cut the mustard. Whether you want to go for something a little more traditional with a beef burger, or you want to push the boat out a little bit with an Elk burger, you'll sure to find something that suits your every desire this Christmas.
