Hair Growth

Hair starts growing in the follicles of our scalp where the protein keratin is produced. Keratin is therefore what our hair is made of. The most important components in this process are the hair follicles and hair shaft. The deepest part of the hair follicle, the hair bulb, is where actual growth takes place via the deposition of keratin and melanin, the pigment responsible for establishing hair colour.

The hair shaft is very simply what we normally refer to as hair, the actual outer structure. As disgusting as it might sound, the hair shaft is made of dead cells, long strains of keratin and a small percentage of water. Because these cells are actually dead, we can cut our hair without feeling a thing which is pretty great.

Hair Growth Cycles

The image below is a visual representation of the different hair growth phases. As you can see, this isn't a constant process and active growth usually takes an average of 3-5 years making up for 90% of the full cycle. In the catagen and telogen phases, 10% of our hair follicles aren't actually growing. However, considering that they're distributed across the scalp, it doesn't result in visible baldness. Finally, after an average of 100 days, the hair shaft is fully shed and the cycle starts again.

On the other hand, if you're experiencing thinning or hair loss, this process might not be running as smoothly as it naturally would.

On That Note

So there you have our quick guide on how hair grows. Of course, the process we've illustrated is how the process takes place in normal conditions. Unfortunately, that's not the case for a good part of the population which suffers from hair loss issues such as alopecia and baldness in the most radical of cases. As usual, we recommend you speak with an industry professional if you feel like taking measures to improve your situation.
