What is Nizoral Shampoo

Simply, Nizoral shampoo 2% is a hair product that contains the active ingredient Ketoconazole. This anti-fungal ingredient was placed in Nizoral to help treat skin conditions caused by fungi and yeast. However, if you're asking yourself, what is Ketoconazole shampoo used to treat, unfortunately, there isn't a straight answer.

On the one hand, Nizoral was originally produced to help with conditions such as Seborrhoeic Dermatitis or extreme cases of dandruff. However, some studies have recently claimed that the Nizoral active ingredient of Ketoconazole means that it can also be used as a shampoo to help hair loss.

Nizoral Shampoo for Hair Loss

The question you're probably wondering is: does Nizoral work for hair loss? The simple answer is, no one is sure. As unhelpful as this is, when it comes to a shampoo for balding, it's important to look at both sides of the argument. Although it doesn't claim to be a hair regrowth shampoo, several studies have suggested that it may help.

Ketoconazole for Hair Loss

Typically, Ketoconazole works by stopping the production of ergosterol and by disrupting the fungi membrane, meaning it helps to combat fungi infections. Although the risk of side effects are low, it has been reported that Nizoral can cause skin irritation and even hair loss in extreme circumstances. As this is the opposite of what we're trying to achieve, it's important that you do your research before trying this treatment.

Nizoral Hair Loss Study

Firstly, it's important to realise that there hasn't been any extensive study on the difference in hair growth from Nizoral shampoo before and after using it. There was a study conducted on mice that suggested Ketoconazole increased hair growth, however, this doesn't necessarily mean that it's effective on humans. Similarly, a small human study concluded that Nizoral was useful as a shampoo for alopecia. Unfortunately, the size of the study means that the Nizoral results are sceptical.

Nizoral and DHT

DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone and is the main cause of hair loss in men. DHT levels reduce the hair follicles ability to promote hair growth. It does this by restricting vital vitamins, proteins and other nourishing chemicals from reaching the hair roots. However, there are suggestions that Nizoral shampoo and Ketoconazole can act as DHT blockers.

How to use Nizoral Shampoo

Using Nizoral shampoo is pretty straightforward as long as you follow the instructions on the bottle. For most instances, use the shampoo twice a week for 2 to 4 weeks, leaving it in your hair for around 4 minutes.

Nizoral and Conditioner

If you're using Nizoral shampoo for hair loss then you may be wondering whether you can also use conditioner. Although some people think it could inhibit the active ingredients, the majority of Ketoconazole shampoo reviews don't see why it would affect it from working.

Hair Restoration Shampoo

Minoxidil has been officially tested and is proven to help hair loss, making it a safer bet. Although there are more powerful alopecia shampoo's around, Minoxidil remains the most popular shampoo for hair growth.

On That Note

Although you could try and use Ketoconazole shampoo for hair loss it seems an unnecessary risk. Considering the reported side effects and lack of reliable testing, using Nizoral shampoo for hair growth seems a risky choice. Sticking to better-known hair growing products such as Minoxidil seem like a safer bet.
