What Is Butcher's Broom?

Good question. Butcher's broom is a plant, more specifically a low, evergreen shrub. It grows to around 3 feet high, which is where it gained it's nickname "knee holly" from. The leaves are very green and prickly, with small green and white flowers blossoming from the plant in spring. It grows primarily in the shade, notably in woodland and hedgerow areas. It takes it's name from a previous use, the small branches of the plant used to be bound together in bunches, and sold to butchers who in turn used them to sweep the floor beneath their stand - butcher's broom.

Butchers Broom Uses

During recent years, the plant has been used for various medical conditions. It's prime use is to improve vascular health. One of the major components of the plant is ruscogenin, which has been scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory uses.

Butcher's broom is also now known as being a wonder for eyes, and is favoured by grooming professionals over man-made eye creams. It fades the appearance of dark circles and the infamous eye bags seen under tired eyes. These bother a lot of people and are not easy to get rid of, therefore butcher's broom is hailed as a godsend. The natural remedy also cleanses the area underneath the eyes, solving issues such as clogged pores or oily skin.

It's also extremely gentle and consequently great for sensitive skin. A lot of people with sensitive skin have the issue of wanting to moisturise, but any product they use irritates their skin further, with butcher's broom this problem is solved.
